MEDIA RELEASE
20th July 2006
School Zone Flashing Lights Meetings
Thanks to the intense interest shown by the media the Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal yesterday agreed to meet with Mr Olsen. In an interview with Alan Jones the Minister said that he was prepared to meet Mr Olsen. Mr Olsen heard the comments and immediately phoned in and accepted the offer.
Mr Olsen was asked to meet the Minister at his offices however Mr Olsen suggested that an inspection on site would be more appropriate. To his credit the Minister agreed and met Mr Olsen at Peakhurst High School, one of his school zone flashing lights sites. The Minister gave approval for the lights to be temporarily reinstalled on the RTA sign for a demonstration.
Following the demonstration the Minister commented that he was quite impressed with what he had seen. He and Mr Olsen discussed in detail the proposed system and the various issues that were of concern to the government.
The meeting concluded with the Minister agreeing to contact the RTA to see if an official trial of Mr Olsen's lights could be arranged, to assess their reliability and effectiveness.
The Minister's office subsequently contacted Mr Olsen and invited him to a meeting with the Minister and RTA in the Minister's office at 11.00am today to discuss a possible trial. Mr Olsen's local MP Kevin Greene will also be in attendance. Mr Greene is an active supporter of local community causes and provided much assistance with issues related to the Lugarno Christmas lights.
