School Zone Lights Trial On Again
In mid July school zone flashing lights were installed at several schools in the St George area by Mr Olsen of Lugarno. They were subsequently removed by the RTA, reinstalled by Mr Olsen then removed again by the RTA.
Following various discussions and meetings between the Minister for Roads, RTA, Energy Australia and Mr Olsen's local member Kevin Greene, it was agreed that an official trial of the lights would take place.
A number of changes to the system were requested by the RTA and have been agreed to, including powering the signs from the overhead Energy Australia mains rather than from a nearby house, and controlling them via a completely automated computer controller. The controller will automatically handle all school and public holidays until the end of 2010 and all daylight savings time changes. Once school holiday dates beyond 2010 are gazetted they can be downloaded via radio to the controller.
The lights will be installed each side of Lugarno Public School, Peakhurst High School, Peakhurst Public School and Peakhurst West Public School. Most of the preparatory work was completed over the past few days and installation of the actual lights will be carried out by the RTA today, commencing at Peakhurst High School at 10am. The trial will officially commence in a few days.
