School Zone Lights Contract Awarded?

A contact rang me yesterday to say that he had been speaking with a person who was installing a school zone lights sign manufactured by Streetscape Projects, the company owned by the son of State MP Eddie Obeid.

He said he enquired about the future of the signs and was told that, quote: "A contract will be issued shortly for the installation of 10,000 signs. It is a done deal".

The Streetscape Projects lights are the lights on a huge pole that hang out across the middle of the road. They appear to be the most expensive ones of the ones being trialled in the current 100 school trial. The average price for the 100 school trial was $36,000. I suspect these ones will cost closer to $50,000 each.

The installations of these lights that we have been monitoring in the St George area have been less reliable than the $350 lights that I installed.

The report on the previous RTA 3-year trial found that the most effective lights were two flashing lights mounted directly on the 40kmh sign.

Was the person installing a Streetscape Projects light who said it was a "done deal" referring to Streetscape Projects having won the contract? 10,000 lights at $50,000 comes to half a billion dollars!!! To the family of a State MP.

Methinks someone needs to ask the Roads Minister some questions.
